William Lanius “Spike” Bryan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, farmer, cattleman, community servant, and faithful follower of Christ, passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Spike was born on November 13, 1939, in Roswell, New Mexico. He lived a life defined by faith, hard work, service to others, and devotion to his family. He believed in doing things the right way, helping those in need, and living according to the values he held dear.
He shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Addie Sue Bryan, who preceded him in death. Together they built a loving family and a legacy of faith, integrity, and perseverance. He is also preceded in death by his parents WJ “Dub” & LaVeryne Bryan and sister Betty Haggart.
Spike is survived by his daughters, Shanna Pujol and husband Louis, and Sharla Riggs and husband Phil. He was a proud grandfather to Bryan Welch, Blake Welch, Randi Jo Barndt, and Matthew Riggs. He was blessed with five great-grandchildren who brought him great joy.
He is also survived by his sisters, Rebecca McIllwain, Rona Owen, and Pamela Boone, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory.
Throughout his life, Spike worked in a variety of occupations. In his younger years, he worked at a gas station, with Petty Flying Service, and at a Ford Tractor dealership. He later became a farmer and cattleman, a profession that suited his strong work ethic and love for the land. Farming and ranching were more than a livelihood to him—they were a way of life.
Service to his community was an important part of who Spike was. He faithfully served on the Munday Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 40 years, always willing to answer the call when help was needed. He also served for nine years on the Munday Independent School District Board, helping guide and support the education of future generations. His dedication to the community reflected his belief that serving others was both a responsibility and a privilege.
Faith was the foundation of Spike’s life. He was a devoted member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Munday, Texas, where he faithfully served and actively participated for many years. His Christian faith influenced every aspect of his life and provided a steady example for his family, friends, and community.
Spike enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He was a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, enjoyed watching old western movies, and spent many hours working jigsaw puzzles. He was also known for his unique sense of humor and the sayings that brought smiles to those around him. If he didn’t quite hear what someone said, he would often respond with, “Stepped in what?” Family and friends also remember being affectionately called “Leroy” or “Willard,” nicknames he handed out with a grin and a twinkle in his eye.
Those who knew Spike will remember a man of strong Christian values, unwavering integrity, and a tireless work ethic. He was always willing to help someone in need, offer encouragement, lend a hand, or share a laugh. He led by example, teaching those around him the importance of faith, family, honesty, and hard work.
More than anything, Spike cherished his family. He took pride in their accomplishments, celebrated their joys, and loved them unconditionally. The lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared will continue to live on through the generations that follow him.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church, Munday Texas, at 10am Saturday, August 29. A funeral service celebrating the life of Spike will be held at the same location at 11am.
While his family mourns his passing, they rejoice in the promise of eternal life and find comfort in knowing that Spike has been reunited with his beloved Addie Sue and is now at peace in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
His life was a testament to faith, service, and love, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
